FAQS
WHAT IS AREOLA TATTOOING + WHO IS IT FOR?
Areola tattooing is a specialized form of paramedical tattooing used to recreate, enhance, or restore the appearance of the areola and nipple. It’s often chosen by individuals after breast reconstruction surgery (such as following a mastectomy), breast reduction, or gender-affirming surgery. It can also benefit anyone who wants to even out shape, correct color, or enhance the appearance of their natural areolas for cosmetic reasons. Each procedure is tailored to your unique anatomy, skin tone, and desired results.
AREOLA TATTOOING PRE-CARE
- Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event. Redness, swelling and peeling may be apparent in that time period.
- Let the provider know if you have a history of cold sores. An antiviral may be prescribed.
- You may not have an active rash in the area being treated.
- Avoidance of Accutane for the past 6 months is required.
- Avoidance of IPL/BBL, laser procedures and waxing for the past 7 days is required.
- Discontinue topical retinoids 24 hours before treatment to reduce sensitivity.
- It is recommended to discontinue the use of Aspirin, NSAIDS, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Ginseng, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E or any other essential fatty acids 1 week before and after treatment to minimize bruising or bleeding from injections. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods and cigarettes 24-48 hours before and after your injections. All of these factors may increase risk of bruising and swelling.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING AREOLA TATTOOING
The appointment starts with a thorough consultation to discuss your goals, choose pigment colors, and map the design. The tattooing process itself is performed with a specialized machine and medical-grade pigments. Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort or minimal pain, and we offer numbing to keep you comfortable. The full session typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the complexity and whether one or both areolas are being treated.
AREOLA TATTOOING POST-CARE
Aftercare is simple but important. You’ll be given specific instructions, including keeping the area clean, dry, and protected during the initial healing period (about 7–10 days). Expect some mild scabbing and light fading as the tattoo settles into the skin. Full healing takes about 4–6 weeks. A touch-up appointment is usually recommended after this time to perfect the shape and color.
HOW LONG WILL IT LAST + WILL I NEED A TOUCH UP?
Areola tattoos are considered permanent, but like all tattoos, they can fade over time due to sun exposure, skin type, and lifestyle. Most clients return for a refresh every 2–5 years. A touch-up 6–8 weeks after the initial session may be needed to ensure the best color retention and symmetry.
IS AREOLA TATTOOING SAFE?
Yes, when performed by a trained and experienced paramedical tattoo artist, it is a safe procedure. We use single-use sterile needles and hypoallergenic, high-quality pigments. However, it’s not recommended if you’re currently undergoing radiation, have certain medical conditions, or if the skin is still healing from recent surgery. A consultation will help determine if you’re a good candidate. It’s also important to follow pre-care instructions such as avoiding blood thinners, alcohol, or excessive sun exposure before your appointment.
WILL IT LOOK REALISTIC?
Yes! The goal of areola tattooing is to create a natural, 3D appearance using advanced shading techniques and customized pigment blending. Whether you’re looking to restore what was lost or enhance what’s already there, we aim for results that help you feel confident and whole again.
YOU DESERVE TO FEEL WHOLE AGAIN.
